Tax Season FAQs
How do I track how many days I spent in the US if I live abroad?
You can request form I-94 which tracks when you enter and exit the US. Go to the official I-94 website and select “Get Most Recent I-94.” Upload this to your tax organizer.
If I’m married, is it better to file jointly or separately?
It really depends! For MOST people, filing jointly will result in a smaller tax bill. Here are some of the credits and and advantages you LOSE when you file separately: the child and dependent care credit, the Earned Income Credit, the deduction for student loan interest, education and tuition credits, Roth IRA contributions. That said, it can make sense to file separately if one spouse has significant medical expenses (more than 7.5% of the income for the year) or other itemized deductions. When we prepare your tax return we will inform you if it might make sense to file separately (it’s rare!).
In response to a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) declaration on the Los Angeles wildfires, the IRS and the state of California have postponed specific tax filing and tax payment deadlines for taxpayers who reside or have a business in the disaster area. Taxpayers in Los Angeles County (individuals and businesses) are granted a postponement to October 15, 2025, to file Federal and California tax returns on 2024 income and make any tax payments that would have been due between January 7 and October 15, 2025.
For Federal, the postponement applies to various tax forms and payments, including estimated tax payments due January 15, April 15, June 16, and September 15, 2025, along with tax returns due April 15 and many others. Additional details are in the IRS news release IR-2025-10.
For California, the postponement also applies to various tax forms and payments, including estimated tax payments due January 15, April 15, June 16, and September 15, 2025, and tax returns due April 15. Additionally, business entities whose corporate or passthrough entity (PTE) tax returns usually are due on March 15 and April 15, 2025, PTE elective tax payments typically due on March 15 and June 15, 2025, and tax-exempt organization returns ordinarily due on May 15, 2025 are all postponed until October 15, 2025.
